SPT (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport) have published a 70 page draft Regional Transport Strategy for the West of Scotland covering a 15 year period through until 2037.

The document isn't rail specific, but about all transport modes within the SPT area. Two of the dominant themes running through the draft document are the envisaged Clyde Metro and improved integrated / smart ticketing. A reference to a cost of £16billion in regards to development of a fully fledged Clyde Metro, but there are no specific details of what form it will take.

On the ticketing point, while there is in theory interoperability between the ScotRail and Subway smart cards, the reality is the ScotRail smart card aside from season tickets and railcards has largely been left behind by QR code mobile ticketing in the ScotRail App which has proven to be much more robust and allows instantaneous purchase and use of the eTickets, unlike the current smart card system.

The draft documentation mentions completion of Subway modernisation, but the Subway modernisation has been delivered so slowly that the modernisation needs modernised. There can be little doubt that a TfL Oyster/Contactless style capping system would be transformational for use of public transport in the area and it has to be questioned why when there was such an integrated system already in operation why years the ticketing system in the SPT area is an archaic disjointed embarrassment.

An easy short term fix on that front would be to enable the Roundabout ticket to be bought as a mobile ticket - it doesn't address the subway issue, but nor does buying one from a ScotRail ticket office or conductor! Potentially getting it onto smart card could, but is I gather more complicated (though an access all gates smart card was made to work for CoP26).

The above link includes how to respond to the consultation, if you wish to directly access the draft document, see PDF link below.

Agree that a tap in/out capped system like in London would be good, but lets start with some very basic stuff. All this talk of Clyde Metros and modal shift seems to be rather pie in the sky, when Scotrail has not restored the Cathcart Circle services since the covid timetables. Used to be choice of 4 trains an hour from Langside, now there is 1 an hour on the Western-side of the circle. Real risk of a downwards spiral here, particularly as reliability of the hourly train turning up hasn’t been that great either. :(

Welcome to the forum @LangsideLlama.

I've had a quick look at the pre-covid and current scheduling on the Cathcart Circle and the restriction of the actual Cathcart Circle service to peak hours only, such that Langside (and the other Western side of the circle stations) now only has 1 train an hour into Central, looks like it represents a cut of 60% of services from these stations.

Not having the full circle service for much of the day also means the complete removal of some journey opportunities. I would agree that this is going wholly in the wrong direction and disappointing that this vastly reduced service level has been allowed to continue with Green MSPs in the Scottish Government.

Have you raised it with local politicians, the MSP for Langside Station is the SNP member for Glasgow Cathcart, James Dornan MSP. He may or may not be your MSP depending where you live.

Also have a look at https://www.theyworkforyou.com/postcode/?pc=G43+2JJ

This website provide contact forms / details and in some cases social media handles for your MSPs, as well as James Dornan as the constituency MSP covering Langside Station, there are 7 Glasgow Regional List MSPs, which include Green co-leader Patrick Harvie - it might be particularly worth raising the issue with him as a Green MSP in government.

Thank you for the welcome. Am pretty cynical about politicians and thus that had not even crossed my mind. Might give it a try as I used to have a season pass pre covid, now I use the train far less. While I no longer need to use it as frequently due to work changes, I am using it much less than I would have at the old frequency. Better still would be a more even split of 3 or 4 trains through the hour.

@LangsideLlama, I'd second getting in touch with your MSPs. May not always get the desired outcome, but I've found they will usually engage and listen, as I've engaged several Highlands & Island MSPs on a constituency matter. Stick at it, get the issue raised and politicians and rail people paying attention !

If for any reason you don't get a response via the contact form on they work for you, there are contact details on the Scottish Parliament website and most MSPs also have public open 'surgery' sessions where constituents can just turn up at specified place / location, and raise the issue face to face.

Hi. I have a question, if you'll excuse me. What restrictions does Cathcart Circle have now? I will be visiting Scotland in a month or two, so would like to clarify if there are any difficulties with trains in Scotland. I have heard that the covid pandemic has made changes to timetables.
